SnapperMapper collects no personal data. There is no account to create, no sign-in, no analytics or crash-reporting SDK, no advertising, and no server operated by us that your photos, locations, or map data are ever sent to.
What stays on your iPhone
Everything the app builds is stored locally on your device, in storage protected by iOS Data Protection:
- The dates, times, and coordinates read from the photos you import
- Thumbnails generated for the map and timeline
- Your trips, days, routes, and points of interest
- Your keep, favorite, and hide decisions, and the identifiers of photos you have hidden
- Your settings, and whether you have completed the introduction
None of this is transmitted anywhere. Deleting the app removes all of it from your device.
Your Photos library
SnapperMapper requests access to your photo library in order to read the capture dates, locations, and images of the photos in the date range you choose. It works under Limited Access if you would rather select individual photos.
The app never edits, deletes, or modifies your photos. Hiding a photo in SnapperMapper affects only SnapperMapper's own map. The original asset in Photos is untouched.
There is exactly one case in which the app writes to your library: when you explicitly ask it to sync a trip album, it creates or updates the membership of a Photos album. It adds and removes photos from that album only. It never deletes an asset from your library.
The two services the app contacts
SnapperMapper has no backend. It does, however, need two things from the network, and you should know what leaves your device when it asks.
Map tiles: OpenFreeMap
The parchment map is drawn from OpenStreetMap data served by OpenFreeMap. Displaying a map sends requests for the tiles covering the area you are looking at. As with any web request, that reveals your IP address and which tiles you asked for to that service. It does not send your photos, your route, or any identifier of you or your device.
Timezones and place names: Apple
To file each photo under the correct local day, and to work out the name of a place you stopped at, the app sends photo coordinates to Apple's geocoding and Maps search services. Apple's handling of those requests is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.
The app keeps as little of what comes back as possible. It stores opaque place identifiers and the last-known display name in its protected database on your iPhone. This lets a place name that has already been found remain visible after you relaunch the app or go offline.
SnapperMapper does not store Apple-returned addresses, categories, phone numbers, websites, venue coordinates, distances, or complete map results. Cached names are removed with their trip once no other trip still uses that place. Nothing in this cache is sent to SnapperMapper or any other service.
Face and selfie detection
The app can recognise which of your snaps are likely selfies, so you can keep them out of an exported journal. This analysis runs entirely on your iPhone using Apple's on-device frameworks. No image, no face data, and no result is ever transmitted. It requires no additional permission.
What you export is yours
PDF trip journals are generated on your device. SnapperMapper does not upload them, and has no knowledge of what you do with a file once you have shared it through iOS.
Children
SnapperMapper is a general-audience app. It collects no personal data from anyone, of any age.
Changes to this policy
If the app's data handling ever changes, this page changes with it, and the date at the top is updated. Material changes will also be described in the app's release notes.
